Girls’ Water Polo: CdM’s Papa named PCL MVP
Corona del Mar High senior Cassidy Papa has earned Most Valuable Player honors in the Pacific Coast League for girls’ water polo.
Papa was joined on the first team by senior twins Ioanna Haralabidis and Stephania Haralabidis, senior attacker Ally McCormick and senior defender Genevieve Weed.
Papa was a versatile attacker for the Sea Kings (27-4), who went a perfect 10-0 in league to capture their 14th straight crown. CdM went on to win its first CIF Southern Section Division 1 title, defeating rival and defending champion Newport Harbor, 6-5, in the title match.
Papa, a co-captain bound for Stanford, had 51 goals, third on CdM, and led the league with 53 assists. She added 31 steals. This is her second straight first-team all-league selection.
Stephania Haralabidis, a lefty attacker, led CdM with 60 goals. She added 23 assists and tied for the team lead with 50 steals. Ioanna Haralabidis, also an attacker, had 43 goals, 17 assists and 30 steals. Both Haralabidis sisters are bound for USC.
McCormick, a lefty attacker headed to BYU for swimming, earned her second straight first-team selection. She was second on CdM with 57 goals, adding 29 assists and 36 steals.
Weed had 27 goals, 17 assists and 23 steals for the Sea Kings.
CdM senior goalie Erica Weed, who was the team’s other co-captain, and senior Morgan Stewart (LMU) earned second-team all-league laurels.
