High School Roundup: CdM sends five to finals

MISSION VIEJO — Corona del Mar High sent five teams to Saturday’s championship finals after Thursday’s preliminaries at Capistrano Valley High.
CdM’s 4x100-yard individual medley team qualified second, as did the Sea Kings’ 6x50 and 4x100 freestyle teams. CdM’s 4x50 medley qualified fourth, and the 4x50 backstroke quartet qualified eighth.
Newport Harbor had its 6x50 free relay team qualify fourth, as did the Sailors’ 4x50 breaststroke relay. Newport’s 4x50 medley qualified third.
The top eight teams in each event qualified for the championship finals.
The 30-team meet concludes with finals at Capo Valley Saturday, beginning at 5 p.m.

BASEBALL
Corona del Mar 3, Northwood 2
CORONA DEL MAR — Senior Dash Johnson struck out six in his complete-game victory for CdM in Friday’s Pacific Coast League game at home.
Johnson improved to 2-1 for the Sea Kings (4-5, 1-2 in league), helping them get their first league win. Nick Roco had a double and two runs batted in, Hunter Heckendorn also doubled and Tyler Maloney drove in a run.
CdM plays at Irvine on Tuesday.

Estancia 11, Godinez 5
SANTA ANA — Ben Beck was three for four with a triple and two runs batted in, as the Eagles won their Orange Coast League game Friday at Godinez.
Tyler Rios was two for five with two runs scored and a double, while Eric Molina had a double and four RBIs. Dylan Reyes was two for four with an RBI, and Levi Stillman added a double.
Steven Macias pitched six innings and got the win for Estancia (6-3, 2-1 in league). Macias is now 3-1.
Estancia plays host to Saddleback on Tuesday.

Huntington Beach 3, Newport Harbor 1
NEWPORT BEACH — The Sailors allowed three unearned runs in the sixth inning, spoiling another stellar pitching performance from Shaun Vetrovec in the Sunset League game Friday at home.
Newport Harbor committed two errors with two outs in the inning, then Huntington Beach hit a three-run home run.
Vetrovec allowed no earned runs and seven hits. He walked none and struck out seven, and has not allowed an earned run in 22 straight innings.
Tk McWhertor was two for three for Newport Harbor. Vetrovec and Jake Norton added hits for the Sailors (5-4, 1-2 in league), who play host to first-place Marina on Tuesday.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
Corona del Mar def. Northwood
IRVINE — Ryan Moss had 14 kills for the Sea Kings in their 26-24, 25-20, 25-20 Pacific Coast League sweep Friday at Northwood High.
Joey Martino and Augie Miller had nine kills each for CdM (8-7, 2-0 in league). Erik Ctvrtlik added 11 digs.
CdM plays host to Irvine on Tuesday.

BOYS’ GOLF
Corona del Mar 184, Northwood 202
IRVINE — Chase Wheatley led CdM with a one-under par 35 in the Pacific Coast League meet Friday at Oak Creek Golf Club.
John and Bryan Hong (both 36), Karick Brown (37) and Brandon Huang (40) also scored for the Sea Kings (2-1 in league).

BOYS’ LACROSSE
Huntington Beach 12, Newport Harbor 6
NEWPORT BEACH — Riley Peterson and Chris Buchanan each scored two goals for the Sailors in the Sunset League opener Friday at Newport Harbor High.
Brian Team and Ritter Hagadorn also scored for the Sailors (2-7, 0-1 in league), as Brandon Rausch and Kole Escher both chipped in with assists. Alex Fuller had six groundballs. Christian Ruelas made nine saves.
The Sailors return to action in another league game at home against Marina on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
