Girls’ Soccer: Newport’s Castillo, Messersmith honored on first team

Newport Harbor High senior midfielders Jenna Castillo and Jill Messersmith have been honored with first-team All-Sunset League honors for girls’ soccer.

Castillo, a repeat first-team selection, is bound for the University of Montana. Messersmith is headed to Boise State. Season statistics were not available, but they provided stability for Newport Harbor as defensive and offensive midfielders, respectively. Messersmith was among the team leaders in goals scored.

Newport Harbor finished 4-15-4, and 2-6-2 in the Sunset League, tied for fourth place.

Sailors sophomore midfielder Natalie Ward, as well as junior defender Jessi Prather, earned second-team all-league honors.

MacKenzie Cerda of Edison was named league MVP, with Madison Gomez of Fountain Valley and Brooke Lillywhite of Edison sharing the Most Outstanding Offensive Player award. Allie Emmons of Los Alamitos earned Most Outstanding Defensive Player laurels, and Steve Soler of Los Alamitos was Coach of the Year.

Los Al (8-0-2) and Edison (7-0-3) were both undefeated in league, with the Griffins winning the title.
