Edison names new baseball coach

Cameron Chinn knows just how tough are the challenges of competing in Sunset League baseball.

As an assistant coach at Los Alamitos High, the 36-year-old saw the individual and team talent that coursed through the league; he finished up his fourth and final year as a Griffins assistant nearly 14 years ago.

He’s about to re-enter the league but this time in a different role.

Chinn last week was named the new baseball head coach at Edison High, Edison Athletic Director Rich Boyce said. Chinn replaces Steve Lambright, who resigned from the position in early July.

Lambright led the Edison program for the last eight years.

Chinn served as head coach at Paramount High the past nine years. Four of his Pirates teams (2007, ‘08, ‘09, ’11) won San Gabriel Valley League championships, and three of his teams reached the CIF Southern Section Division 3 baseball playoff quarterfinals.

“I really had a nice nine years over there,” Chinn said of Paramount, where he was the department chair and a teacher in the school’s physical education department. “It’s a tremendous school with outstanding students and great support from the staff.”

Chinn, who said he will teach physical education and freshmen orientation classes at Edison, said he’s eager to head the Chargers’ baseball program and return to the Sunset League.

“This is a great opportunity to coach in one of the best public school leagues around,” he said.

“One of the reasons why I sought the Edison job is because of the great baseball history at the school. They have always had great teams, great athletes and the area has great youth programs that feed into the school. I’m excited about this new challenge and chapter in my coaching career.”
