Dries stands out at event
Annika Dries won gold at the Summer Olympics in London last year. Sunday, she led Team London to the a title at the Future 50 Classic.
Dries, a former aquatics star at Laguna Beach High and member of the 2012 USA Women’s National Water Polo Team, took tournament MVP honors after scoring four goals in Sunday’s championship match won by Team London, 9-7, over Team Sydney at Foothill High.
Dries, now at Stanford, served as a captain for Team London.
In the third-place game, Team Athens, coached by Laguna Beach High boys’ and girls’ water polo coach Ethan Damato, edged Team Beijing, 13-12, in a shootout.
The three-day tournament, which started Oct. 25, included a mix of the top women’s water polo players in the nation. Laguna Beach freshman player Aria Fischer played with Dries on Team London. Fischer scored one goal in Sunday’s win against Team Sydney.
Laguna Beach junior Makenzie Fischer played for Team Beijing, and scored once in the third-place game against Team Athens.
