Vanguard captures gold medal
Vanguard Water Polo Club of Huntington Beach traveled to Indiana University to compete at the TYR Championship Cup and returned home with the gold medal in the boys’ 14-and-under division.
The Championship Cup included the top teams which had to qualify to enter the tournament which concluded Saturday.
Vanguard went 6-0 over the two-day event which started last Friday. Vanguard defeated Chicago Park District (14-2), Greenwich (20-5), Socal (8-4), Santa Barbara (13-4), and SHAQ (13-4), to move on to the division final.
In the title game, Vanguard, coached by Uros Dzelebzic and Sasa Branisavlejic, again defeated Socal, 9-5.
On Sunday, the 2013 TYR Champions Cup Sportsmanship Awards were given out and the Jody Campbell for male players award went to Vanguard’s Cameron Reagan.
Campbell was a member of the USA men’s Olympic water polo team in 1984 and 1988.
The Vanguard 14U boys’ team has won three major tournament championships this fall.
