High School Roundup: CdM falls in semis against Huntington Beach

POWAY — Corona del Mar High lost, 25-18, 25-16, against Huntington Beach in the gold division semifinals on Saturday at Epic Volleyball Center.

Joey Martino had six kills against the Oilers.

CdM topped Punahou of Hawaii, 21-25, 25-14, 25-7, in one quarterfinal, behind eight kills and three blocks from Ryan Moss, eight kills and four blocks from Tommy Brooks, eight kills by Martino and seven by Augie Miller. Tommy Casey had 12 digs in the quarterfinal.

In pool play on Friday at Alliant University, CdM defeated Iolani of Hawaii, 25-14, 25-17, topped El Segundo, 25-23, 25-23, bested Orange Lutheran, 25-18, 25-10, and handled Newbury Park, 25-18, 25-13.

Brooks had nine kills and hit .717 and Martino had seven kills and five digs against Newbury Park.

Martino (seven kills) and Kevin Fults (five) led the way against Orange Lutheran, while Martino had 10 kills, Brooks had six and Fults added five against El Segundo.

Against Iolani, Moss had nine kills, while Martino added five. Tommy Casey had six digs and Matt Ctvrtlik contributed 18 assists.

Irvine Invitational

Newport Harbor High sophomore Grace Clemente finished second in the pole vault with a clearance of 10 feet, and sophomore Rachelle Alatorre was third in the shot put with a mark of 36-4 on Saturday at Irvine High.

Irvine Invitational

Newport Harbor High senior Marcell DeBarros finished second in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles and third in the 110 high hurdles on Saturday at Irvine High.

DeBarros posted personal-best times of 15.95 seconds in the high hurdles and 40.91 in the longer race.

BOYS’ SWIMMING

Estancia 91, Savanna 63

Jason Chesemore won the 200 freestyle in 2 minutes, 8.46 seconds and the 100 free in 54.7 seconds to pace the Eagles in the nonleague meet on Thursday.

Eli Sperling won the 200 individual medley (2:40.2) and the 500 free (6:30.33), while Kyle Fitzgerald (50 free in 25.16), Chris DeFrenza (100 backstroke in 1:10.13) and Victor Godfrey (100 breaststroke in 1:20.98) were also winners for Estancia.
