Huge Trophy Invite
At the traditional 8:41 a.m. starting time Saturday, the 45th Laguna Beach Trophy Invitational will get underway at Guyer Field.
Laguna boys’ track and field Coach Scott Wittkop said that 38 teams and 1,565 athletes are scheduled to compete at this year’s event.
“Once again, we have an amazing field of athletes coming to Laguna to compete in the Trophy Invite,” Wittkop said. “It is great to see the rich track traditions continue in our city and high school.”
At last year’s invitational, Laguna placed ninth in varsity girls, 12th in varsity boys, 12th in frosh/soph girls, and 13th in frosh/soph boys.
All running and field events will start 8:41 am. Gates to the stadium open at 6:30 a.m. Adult admission is $5, and students with an ASB card, $3 (without ASB card, $4). The is no admission charge for youth under age 10.
Wittkop said that the Laguna Beach Trophy Invitational will be featured on the Dyestatcal.com website this weekend.
Both Laguna teams competed March 14 at the 35th Irvine/Asics Invitational. Highlights included:
Boys: Nate Lancaster (200 meters, third; 100 meters, third); Preston GrandPre (100, fourth); Kailar Pike (high jump, fourth); Drake Butler (frosh/soph 1,600, first); Penn Neilson (frosh/soph 1,600, second); Mason Pitz (frosh/soph 3,200, first); Mike Santana (triple jump, third); Cale Airey (frosh/soph 400, first).
Girls: (third place in team standings): 4x100 relay (Coco Putnam, Amy Hewlett, Rose Niejermier, Sarah Ross, first); Janie Crawford (400, first; 200, second; triple jump, first); Natalie Kimball (800, second); Coco Putnam (300 hurdles, first, school record); 4x400 relay (Crawford, Putnam, Kimball, Brielle Budroe, first).
Following Saturday’s invitational, the Laguna teams are idle until a three-way Orange Coast League meet it will host April 3. The Breakers will go up against Calvary Chapel and Estancia.
