College Roundup: Morales stays hot against Hawaii

UC Irvine 7, Hawaii 1
HONOLULU — Senior Andrew Morales pitched 7 1/3 shutout innings to lead the visiting Anteaters in the first game of a three-game Big West Conference series late Friday night.
Morales, who is 6-0 this season, 16-0 as an Anteater and 37-1 as a collegian, having spent his freshman and sophomore seasons at Rio Hondo Community College, extended his scoreless-innings streak to 25 1/3 by allowing seven hits, walking one and striking out four. He lowered his earned-run average to 0.45.
Junior catcher Jerry McClanahan was two for three with two runs batted in and junior right fielder Kris Paulino was one for three with a two-run home run, his first of the season, to pace UCI’s 11-hit attack.
Taylor Sparks and Grant Palmer also had two hits apiece for UCI (19-10, 3-1 in conference).
Hawaii senior shortstop Austin Wobrock, a Newport Harbor High product, was two for three with an RBI to lead the Rainbow Warriors (14-14, 2-2).

Doubleheader
Host Vanguard won the first game, 5-3, but fell in the second game, 3-1, for a Golden State Athletic Conference split against The Master’s on Saturday.
Taylor McKnight was two for three with a home run and two runs batted in, while Brandon Sandoval and Bret Collins had two hits each in the Lions’ victory.
Eddie Rivera pitched a complete-game three-hitter for No. 25-ranked Vanguard, which finished the day 26-13, 17-10 in conference.
McKnight and Thomas Mobley were two for three in Game 2, in which Collins added two more hits and Sandoval drove in the lone run.
The Master’s is 30-10, 18-10.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Cal/Nevada Championships
LA JOLLA — Senior Ericka Nowell and junior Itos Sikhionbare each earned second-place finishes to help UC Irvine finsih third among 25 teams in the two-day meet concluded Saturday at UC San Diego.
Nowell clocked a time of 59.04 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles, whiel Aikhionbare had a mark of 48 feet, 11 3/4 inches in the shot put.
Chelsea Schneider was third in the 800 for UCI in 2 minutes, 12.93 seconds, while Kaulyn Lee-McNeill (1:00.53 in the 400 hurdles) and Megan George (100 in 14.09) had fourth-place finishes for the Anteaters.
UCI had 84 team points, behind only San Diego State (178) and Long Beach State (123).

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Cal/Nevada Championships
LA JOLLA — Freshman Lloyd Sicard won the 400-meter hurdles and was third in the 110 high hurdles to help UC Irvine finish fifth among 23 teams in the two-day meet completed Saturday at UC San Diego.
Sicard’s time in the 400 hurdles was 52.60 seconds. He had a clocking of 14.38 in the high hurdles.
Freshman Isaiah Thompson was fourth in the 800 in 1 minutes, 51.89 seconds, while Duane Soloman (53.85 in the 400 hurdles) and Tommy Newton-Neal (9:24.95 in the 3,000 steeplechase) had fifth-place finishes for UCI.
Sicard also had a leg on the 4x100 relay that finished fourth, to have a hand in 27 of UCI’s 68 team points.
Long Beach State won the meet with 164.5 points.

SOFTBALL
Doubleheader
Host Vanguard University dropped a pair to Biola, 4-0 in the first game and 5-2 in the second of the Golden State Athletic Conference matchup Saturday.
Haley Croce was three for six and Taylor Hallahan was three for seven combined for Vanguard, which received Game 2 runs batted in from Gabrielle Jackson and Taylor Wilson.
Vanguard fell to 27-19, 9-7 in conference.
Biola is 29-7, 12-4.

UC Irvine 8, UC Davis 2
Kelsey Thornton scored three goals to lead the host Anteaters in the Big West Conference match Saturday.
Jillian Yocum made 10 saves to help No. 6-ranked UCI improve to 18-6, 2-0 in conference.
No. 16-ranked UC Davis is 11-14, 0-3.
