Pet of the Week: Little Ricky

Little Ricky was on the euthanization list in San Bernardino County when Home Free Animal Sanctuary in Newport Beach saved him from a cruel fate. Initially, he was so fearful that he would not even walk. But after time in a loving foster home, he’s now doing better on a leash.

The 2-year-old pit bull weighs less than 50 pounds and still needs to gain a bit, but he is responding very well to training while in his foster home.

Ricky is housebroken, mellow and a big fan of playtime with his humans. He is friendly — but shy — with new people and is not a barker. Ricky’s behavior with smaller dogs and children has not yet been assessed, but with proper introductions, he’s fine with larger dogs. Ricky is neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations.

Home Free rescues dogs from high-kill shelters and abusive or neglectful situations and provides a temporary sanctuary while permanent homes are found. The nonprofit also contracts with the city of Newport Beach to provide animal shelter services.
