The Crowd: Golf tourney raises more than $160k for charity

The 17th annual Pacific Coast Classic Golf Tournament hit the greens in June at the Monarch Beach Resort Golf Links in Dana Point on behalf of Olive Crest. More than $160,000 was raised from a field of 165 golfers, with proceeds benefiting Olive Crest’s foster care and adoption programs.

Following the day of golf, the players and their guests, who were more than 250 strong, headed up the coast to the trendy Tommy Bahama restaurant in Newport Beach for a fabulous island-themed evening dinner celebration. Enjoying the incredible spread that included mini pork avocado tostadas, king crab legs, Humboldt Bay kumamoto oysters and so much more were social standouts Olivia and Howard Abel, Dennis Kuhl, Lori and Mike Feeney, Lorraine and Dennis Bader, Melissa and Bill Meehan, Zetta and Bobby Grich and Shannon and Jeff Mathews. Also front and center was Olive Crest’s OC executive director Tim Bauer who thanked the crowd for its generous support.

Roy Emerson tennis tournament unfolds on Newport courts

The Palisades and Newport Beach tennis clubs cleared their courts for the 55th annual Roy Emerson events at the dawn of summer tennis on the coast. The kickoff day and the evening of revelry were all created for the Adoption Guild of Southern Orange County. The tournament continued over two weekends in June, with participants representing all levels of the sport.

Opening night was chaired by Sue Podany with assists from a committee consisting of Joyce White, Carol Adams, Stephanie Peleuses, Jeri Nevins, Kim Mishon, Marge Scannell and Christine Johnson. Podany and crew invited twenty local eateries to present stations for the large crowd of tennis lovers. Garduno’s, Cest Si Bon, California Pizza Kitchen, Ho Sum Bistro, La Cave, Blue Water Grill, Sabatino’s, Sapori, and Woody’s were among the generous.

Major sponsors deserving credit were Jackie Glass, Steve and Pam Fossler, Jeannie Hidey, Doug and Jeanne Jackson, J.D. Kelleher, Pamela Selber, and Larry and Heather Arnold.

Tennis legend Roy Emerson himself greeted friends Britt and Bob Meyer, Steve Joyce, Burton Gonzell, Julia Brown, Diana Hurst, Lori Schroeder, Marcello and Jennifer Apollonio, and Paul Migdal.

Saving children with diabetes

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s (JDRF) 20th anniversary Platinum Dream Gala unfolded recently at the Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel. More than 500 guests raised more than $1.1 million for type 1 diabetic research.

Honored guests of the night were O.C.’s Lauri and Steve Delson, lauded by the evening’s emcee Bill Rogers and gala co-chairs Analissa Albert, Toni Berlinger and James Cueva. Major sponsors were Allergan Foundation, the Mary and Dick Allen Diabetes Center at Hoag Hospital, the Warmington Family, Herbert Family Foundation, and Toni and Steve Berlinger, among others.

Upwards of 26 million Americans live with diabetes. The disease accounts for more than $250 billion in annual U.S. healthcare costs. There is no cure.

Not yet, anyway.

Boys chorus celebrates America

The All-American Boys Chorus joined jazz artist David Benoit for a very special concert July 9 at the Irvine Barclay Theatre. Organizers billed the concert as “Celebrate America,” featuring music by American composers including Leonard Bernstein and Irving Berlin. A special musical tribute to America’s military was also presented.

Under the direction of Wesley Martin, the concert topped off with Benoit joining the boys performing his own composition titled “Bike Ride,” created especially for the AABC. Benoit joined a star-studded list of musical icons such as Tony Bennett, Melissa Manchester, Josh Groban, Paul Anka and Taylor Hicks who have performed with the chorus.

The cars were the stars

The 9th annual Balboa Bay Club Father’s Day Car Show debuted June 19 on the upper-deck parking garage at the Balboa Bay Resort. A crowd of more than 1,000 car enthusiasts converged on the show to ponder more than 100 entrants, including American classics, foreign sport cars, vintage motorcycles and a selection of amazing new vehicles hitting the market.

Live music by Steve Garber and his band Conscious Sedation entertained the large crowd, along with an array of carnival attractions created by the BBC’s Aaron Trent and Melanie Hertrick that included magician Abbott the Average, tattoo artists, balloon artists and more.

Major car show sponsors were Michael Bryan, Beverly Hills Motorsport, Realtor Brian Liberto, Crevier Classic Cars, Fletcher Jones Motorcars, Heron Haberdashery, Maserati and Ferrari of Newport Beach, Tesla, McLaren, Meguiar’s, Phillips Auto and Wells Fargo Private Banking represented by Noel Hamilton.

Awards were presented to show winners, including “Sexiest Car” that was presented to Steve Van Valkenburg for his new custom metallic, candy apple red Mercedes sedan.

Sneak peak on the coast

On Monday, the legendary Newport Beach Country Club will officially open its spectacular new doors on East Coast Highway. Presentation tours will commence next week with a preview cocktail event slated to kick off the grand opening Monday evening.
