As UC Irvine celebrates its 50th anniversary, it’s logging a record number of applications from freshman and transfer students.

Applications for fall 2016 admittance grew 10% to 97,759 from 88,792 in 2015.

UCI’s double-digit percent increase is part of a record year for the University of California system, which received 206,000 applicants for at least one of the nine undergraduate UC campuses.

The UC experienced a 5.8% increase from fall 2015’s 194,000 applications.

Though UCI is decades younger than some of its counterparts, it landed in the fourth spot behind UCLA (119,326 applications), UC Berkeley (101,655) and UC San Diego (102,692).

UCI will register 650 more students than in previous years as part of the system’s agreement with the state to enroll an additional 5,000 California-resident students for the upcoming fall semester, according to a news release.
