High surf on the way to Orange County beaches

Waves of 4 to possibly 10 feet are forecast for Orange County beaches from late Thursday through Saturday, producing strong rip currents that could be dangerous for swimmers, the National Weather Service said Wednesday.

A beach hazard notice says a large west-northwest swell will build rapidly and peak Friday before subsiding Saturday.

The highest surf is expected north of Newport Beach, though swimmers and surfers at all beaches are advised to beware of rip currents.

Minor beach erosion also is possible, the statement says.

An even larger west-northwest swell is expected late Sunday through Monday, resulting in more high surf, according to the weather service.

Rain also is in the forecast for Sunday.
