Political Landscape: Costa Mesa group opposing ‘no-growth’ initiative to meet

A group of Costa Mesa residents will meet Thursday to plan opposition to a citizens initiative that critics say would restrict growth in the city.

The group, organized by former City Council candidate Chris Bunyan, is calling itself Costa Mesa Residents Against the No-Growth Initiative.

The petition in question was organized by Costa Mesa First, a political action group, and was submitted to the Orange County registrar of voters office last month for signature verification.

If placed on November’s general election ballot and approved by a majority of voters, the proposed law would require voter approval of certain residential and commercial developments.

To trigger the law, projects would have to meet various criteria, such as requiring a zoning change and having 40 or more residential units.

Thursday’s meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at The Lab’s Crew Salon, 2930 Bristol St.
