Around Town: Sobriety checkpoint planned for Friday in Irvine

The Irvine Police Department will conduct a sobriety checkpoint from 8 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Saturday in the area of Culver Drive and Barranca Parkway.

Motorists will be given information about impaired driving, and driver’s licenses will be checked.

A secondary area will be designated for drivers suspected of being impaired to be evaluated.

Tickets for 3 summer concerts to go on sale

Tickets for performances by Jim Gaffigan and Ziggy Marley and Steel Pulse during the Toyota Summer Concert Series at the 2016 Orange County Fair will go on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Gaffigan will perform at 8:15 p.m. Aug. 4. Marley and Steel Pulse will play at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 13 and 14. The shows will be at the Pacific Amphitheatre at the fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.

Tickets for Gaffigan start at $35. Admission for Marley and Steel Pulse starts at $27.50.

Tickets will be available via Ticketmaster or the OC Fair & Event Center box office, 88 Fair Drive.

Volunteers sought for seed collection and planting

Newport Banning Land Trust’s ReCreate Restoration Program is seeking volunteers to collect seeds from Banning Ranch and plant them in the trust’s native plant nursery.

Seed collection and planting will take place from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. Volunteers can meet at 1010 17th St. in Costa Mesa.

Reid Day School to hold free event on ‘Neuroscience of Gifted’

Reid Day School in Costa Mesa will host a free educational event from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

“The Neuroscience of Gifted” will be presented by neuroscientist Nicole Tetreault and colleagues.

Reid Day School is for students considered “twice exceptional,” meaning they are gifted and have a learning, emotional or behavioral issue.

The school is at 151 Kalmus Drive.

Thousands of church leaders to gather in Irvine

More than 3,000 leaders of church communities are expected to gather for the eighth annual Catalyst West event March 3 and 4 at Mariners Church in Irvine.

Catalyst West, formed in 1999, is recognized as one of the largest gatherings of Christian leaders in the country, according to a news release.

“We believe Catalyst is an event that everyone can walk away from with valuable insight into the world around them,” Executive Director Tyler Reagin said in a statement.

Mariners Church is at 5001 Newport Coast Drive.

Vanguard to host Ensure Justice Conference

The annual Ensure Justice Conference at Vanguard University in Costa Mesa will be held March 4 and 5.

Each year, the university’s Global Center for Women and Justice and community partners hold the event, which focuses on local and global issues related to the exploitation of women and children.

The event will kick off with a Walk for Freedom 5K at 11 a.m. March 4 at the Crown Plaza hotel, 3131 Bristol St., Costa Mesa.

The conference will take place from 1 to 8 p.m. March 4 and 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 5 at Newport Mesa Church at Vanguard University, 55 Fair Drive. It will include panel sessions, healthcare provider training and networking opportunities.

Concordia professor named a Kelso fellow

Stephen Larson, a business professor at Concordia University Irvine, was named a fellow by the Louis O. Kelso Fellowship at the School of Management and Labor Relations at Rutgers University.

The fellowships are given to scholars who study broadened ownership of capital in a democratic society.

Larson will now be part of the Rutgers School of Management’s network of national professors.
