SchoolPower, a nonprofit that raises money for the Laguna Beach Unified School District’s four schools, grossed $300,000 from its 32nd annual dinner dance last month at the Ritz-Carlton in Dana Point, according to a news release.

Guests enjoyed dinner, dancing and bidding on silent and live auction items during the event, whose theme was “Mission: Not Impossible.”

Of the money raised, donors contributed $158,000, which will go toward the hiring of specialists to help students “build resilience to daily stress and anxiety, as well as support students who exhibit more serious mental health issues,” the release said.

The district wants to hire a social and emotional support director and two student support specialists, all full-time positions, Leisa Winston, the district’s assistant superintendent of human resources and communications, wrote in an email. The district posted the director opening online and is looking to hire someone by May, while the support specialist jobs will be posted in May for the 2017-18 school year, Winston said.

“The support received from SchoolPower will kick-start our Student Well-Being Initiative and the district is committed to continuing this work for years to come,” Supt. Jason Viloria said in the release.”This will help create additional opportunities for our students to receive the support they need to be well-rounded and successful.”

Revenue from the live and silent auctions, the raffle and ticket sales will help fund SchoolPower’s annual support for academics, music and the arts at all four Laguna public schools, Executive Director Robin Rounaghi wrote in an email.
