Authorities are warning the public about an online article that falsely claims there was a fatal attack in Irvine.

“There’s no truth to the article, and we are advising community members to avoid clicking on the link to protect their computers from a virus,” said Irvine police spokesperson Farrah Emami.

The hoax article, which is making rounds on social media, is not isolated to Irvine. It has been duplicated multiple times naming different cities across the country, according to a Facebook post from the Irvine Police Department.

Police are not sharing the name of the website or article to avoid further spreading the false information, Emami said.

Anyone with concerns about the hoax article is advised to call their local law enforcement, Emami said.
