Auction of abandoned boats set for Friday in Newport

Boating enthusiasts who are interested in bidding on a used canoe, kayak or sailboat will have their chance this week.

Newport Beach officials will auction abandoned boats Friday morning at the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Harbor Patrol Division, 1901 Bayside Drive, Corona del Mar.

Potential buyers can look at the vessels starting at 8 a.m. The auction begins at 9. Buyers must pay cash immediately after the auction.

Newport Beach has hosted such an auction three times a year since 2003. After the Harbor Patrol impounds a vessel, its owner has several months to claim it. If it isn’t claimed, the boat is auctioned, with proceeds going to the city or county, depending on where the boat was found, according to city officials.
