Despite being thrown from her car, a woman walked away from a wreck in which the vehicle flew off a Costa Mesa freeway Monday morning, according to fire officials.

Emergency crews responded to a report of a crash on the transition road from the southbound 73 Toll Road to the southbound 55 Freeway at 6:22 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

Paramedics found that a vehicle had traveled down an embankment and come to a rest near a car wash on Bristol Street, according to Costa Mesa fire Capt. Chris Coates.

Fire officials think the car went airborne for about 20 to 30 feet after it left the roadway, Coates said.

It then nosed into the ground and rolled, ejecting the driver, a woman in her 40s, Coates said.

But when firefighters arrived, the woman was walking around, according to the Fire Department.

Crews took her to a trauma center as a precaution, but she did not appear to have life-threatening injuries, Coates said.
