Costa Mesans for Responsible Government, a political action committee, has endorsed a citizens initiative that seeks to require direct voter approval for new projects in Fairview Park.

The Fairview Park Preservation Alliance is gathering signatures for its proposed law to be on the November general election ballot.

“We’re appreciative of the CM4RG endorsement to help us push toward our goal of collecting 7,000 signatures by the end of March,” alliance President Richard Mehren said in a statement.

CM4RG describes itself as a “grass-roots, nonpartisan organization.”

The alliance contends that some city-sponsored projects at Fairview Park “degrade the biological and archaeological resources and take away the open space that many appreciate,” according to a CM4RG news release.

If approved by a majority of city voters in November, the alliance’s initiative would require projects such as new parking lots or playgrounds within the 208-acre park to require voter approval before proceeding.

O’Neill announces endorsements in Newport council race

Newport Beach City Council candidate Will O’Neill recently announced several endorsements for his campaign, including some from Newport Mayor Diane Dixon, council members Kevin Muldoon, Scott Peotter, Marshall “Duffy” Duffield and Orange County District Atty. Tony Rackauckas.

“Will’s early endorsements show momentum, hard work and commitment to the community,” Muldoon said in a statement. “His fundraising reflects the strong support from all areas of the city.”

O’Neill, an attorney and a member of the city’s Finance Committee, is running for the District 7 seat, which represents Newport Coast and Newport Ridge.

Phil Greer, an attorney, and Fred Ameri, a former city planning commissioner, are also running for the seat, currently held by Councilman Keith Curry, who will be termed out.
