Costa Mesa man, 20, rescued by copter after medical emergency on Pacific Crest Trail

A Costa Mesa man was airlifted from a remote part of the Pacific Crest Trail in Apple Valley on Saturday when he suffered a medical emergency, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

Zachary Hunt, 20, had been cross-country running in the area with friends who called 911 and asked for help, according to authorities.

A sheriff’s patrol helicopter responded and found Hunt, who still appeared to need medical help, the sheriff’s department said in a news release.

An air rescue helicopter responded but was unable to land because of the steep terrain, authorities said.

The helicopter crew lowered a rescuer to Hunt who was then hoisted up into the helicopter and flown to a nearby ambulance where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to the sheriff’s department.
