Around Town: Pet expo comes to fairgrounds this weekend

America’s Family Pet Expo this weekend at the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa will give guests a chance to see reptiles, fish, miniature horses, rare birds and more, adopt animals to join the family and cheer on four-legged performers.

Last year’s expo welcomed 45,000 visitors and featured more than 600 adoptions of dogs, cats and guinea pigs, organizers said.

This year’s event will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

In addition to adoptions and animal shows and displays, the expo will feature experts sharing information on how to care for certain pets.

Corona del Mar school to hold science fair

Harbor Day School in Corona del Mar will host its second annual Maker Faire Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The event in the school’s Blass Gymnasium will offer activities for children in kindergarten through eighth grade, such as building cardboard structures, making LED light circuits and printing objects with 3-D printers.

Vendors will include robotics teams from Sage Hill School in Newport Coast and Servite High School in Anaheim.

Costa Mesa nonprofit schedules celebration event

Costa Mesa-based nonprofit Trellis will hold its first “We’re Better Together — An Evening of Celebration and Support” from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Chuck Jones Center in Costa Mesa.

Trellis gathers individuals, churches and businesses to address issues such as homelessness, education and cultural integration.

“‘We’re Better Together — An Evening of Celebration and Support’ marks five years of positive change,” Ian Stevenson, Trellis’ executive director, said in a statement. “Through the growing network of Trellis, we have helped countless people facing homelessness get off the streets, have seen direct results in improvements to education and have integrated cultures, including bringing neighborhoods together.”

The business-casual event will offer dinner, dessert and musical entertainment. Tickets are $30.

Davis Magnet School’s Eco Night set for Monday

Davis Magnet School in Costa Mesa will hold a community fair on environmental education.

Eco Night will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, featuring a watershed model, live animals and hands-on projects for guests.

Environmental education groups including Inside the Outdoors of Costa Mesa and the Environmental Nature Center of Newport Beach will attend.

Volunteers sought for house cleanup in Costa Mesa

Volunteers are sought for the second annual Neighbors Helping Neighbors house cleanup on April 30 in Costa Mesa with Mayor Steve Mensinger, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Christ Lutheran and Palm Harvest churches.

The effort cleans homes of needy residents through donations and volunteers.

People and funds for event preparation, painting and cleanup materials are needed, organizers say.

Fairhaven Memorial Park’s annual Star-Spangled Banner Singer Contest welcomes Southern California residents 13 and older to enter videos for the chance to sing the national anthem at Fairhaven’s Memorial Day event..

Potential performers have until May 1 to send a YouTube link of themselves singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” to cynthia.adair@dignitymemorial.com.

One person will be selected to sing the anthem May 30 at Fairhaven Memorial Park’s 24th annual Memorial Day event in Santa Ana, titled “Honoring Our Troops.”

Poster contestants could be Angels bat kids

Discovery Cube Orange County is holding an Eco Challenge poster contest in which five winners will get to be honorary bat kids at an Angels baseball game in August or September. Entries must have a theme of green waste or food waste.

One winner from each of the five Orange County Board of Supervisors districts will be chosen based on the posters’ originality, visual clarity, relevance to theme, artwork and effectiveness of message.

The contest is open to boys and girls who will be ages 8 to 14 during the Angels regular season, which runs until Oct. 2.

Posters can be mailed or taken to Discovery Cube, 2500 N. Main St., Santa Ana, by June 30. The winners will be notified by July 31.
