4 meetings set in Costa Mesa to discuss voting districts

The city of Costa Mesa will hold four community meetings next month for residents to learn more about the city’s proposed move to district-based elections.

The meetings will discuss the process of drawing maps to split Costa Mesa into voting areas, with each area electing a City Council member to represent it.

Consultant David Ely of Compass Demographics will provide an idea of how the districts might be drawn and will take public input.

• 7 p.m. Thursday at the Neighborhood Community Center, 1845 Park Ave.

• 10 a.m. June 4 at Halecrest Park, 3107 Killybrooke Lane

• 7 p.m. June 15 at St. Joachim Catholic Church, 1964 Orange Ave.

• 10 a.m. June 18 at the Balearic Community Center, 1975 Balearic Drive

Spanish and Vietnamese interpreters will be available at the meetings.

RSVPs are requested but not required.

For more information or to RSVP, email districtelections@costamesaca.gov or call the city clerk’s office at (714) 754-5225.

The City Council agreed in April to move toward district-based elections as part of an agreement to avoid a threatened voting-rights lawsuit alleging that the current system is biased against Latino residents.

The question of whether the city should switch to district-based council elections will be put to local voters in November.
