Friends and family members gathered Saturday in Newport Beach to remember Brock McCann, the 8-year-old boy who was struck and killed by a trash truck at a local intersection May 25.

The memorial service at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, with Brock’s parents, Bernadette and Murphy, leading a New Orleans-style parade, honored the child known for his athleticism and love of football, basketball and cake.

“As tiny as he was, he could fill this whole house with his belly laugh,” Brock’s mother, Bernadette, said Tuesday in an interview with the Daily Pilot.

Brock was riding his bicycle home from Newport Heights Elementary School when the trash truck hit him at 15th Street and Michael Place, one block north of Irvine Avenue.

Donations to help his family may be made to the Brock McCann Fund at gofundme.com/brockmccann. The fund had raised nearly $76,000 as of Friday evening.
