Pedestrian seriously hurt when she’s hit by an SUV on Newport Boulevard

A pedestrian was struck and critically injured by an SUV in Costa Mesa on Friday night, according to police.

The unidentified woman was crossing the northbound lanes of Newport Boulevard near Rochester Street when a Nissan Xterra hit her about 8:30 p.m., Costa Mesa police said in a news release.
At least one witness told police that the SUV was headed north on Newport Boulevard when it hit the woman, who was walking near the crosswalk on the south side of the intersection, according to police.

The woman might have been crossing against a red light; the investigation is continuing, police said.

Paramedics took the pedestrian to Orange County Global Medical Center, where she’s in critical condition being treated for a skull fracture and severe brain trauma, according to police.
Authorities estimated the pedestrian was in her 30s or 40s but did not have any other information about her identity.

The Xterra’s 24-year-old driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, according to police. She did not show any signs of impairment or intoxication, authorities said.
