Corona del Mar Today: Lady Justice isn’t blind to security cameras

Three men stole a 150-pound statue of Lady Justice from in front of a Corona del Mar law office late Nov. 8, according to police and the victim, attorney Melinda Luthin.

The resin statue cost about $1,400, Luthin said.

Private surveillance captured images of the men walking by, heading north past her office at 2721 E. Coast Highway at 10:20 p.m., she said.

They returned about 20 minutes later and appeared to be casing the building, she said, and at 11:03 p.m., “they yanked it off its frame and took it away.”

Luthin has posted images of the suspects in her office windows, as well as online.

Police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella said the theft occurred about the same time as two vandalism incidents in Corona del Mar, but no property was taken in those cases.

“Our detectives will, of course, look for any ties between these cases — and with any other cases in the city,” Manzella said.

Section of dog park closed through Nov. 22

The upper north end of the Civic Center Dog Park will be closed for construction until Nov. 22, according to the city.

The construction is related to improvements to the park, including a small dog area with a separate entrance, an additional water fountain and new main entrance gates.

The area will reopen at 8 a.m. Nov. 22.

In March, the Newport Beach Parks, Beaches & Recreation Commission voted to go forward with plans for a new dog park, as well as to carve out an area in the existing Civic Center Dog Park for dogs weighing less than 25 pounds.
