Woman’s body found hanging from post in Newport nature preserve in apparent suicide

The body of a 22-year-old woman who apparently committed suicide was found hanging from a light post early Thursday in the Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve, authorities said.

The woman’s boyfriend found her hanging by a belt near the 2000 block of University Drive, said Orange County sheriff’s Lt. Jeff Hallock.

That area of the preserve is often used by early-morning joggers.

Newport Beach police responded to the scene about 6 a.m., with the Sheriff’s Department following shortly after, authorities said.

Hallock said the woman’s death does not appear to involve foul play.
