2.8-magnitude quake centered in Newport-Mesa area; second shaker since Sunday

A small earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 2.8 jostled the Newport Beach-Costa Mesa area at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

A USGS map shows the quake was centered about a mile south of Costa Mesa near the Back Bay in Newport Beach.

There were no immediate reports of damage. The Costa Mesa Police Department tweeted that it is performing preliminary checks.

Another small earthquake hit the same area earlier this week. A shallow magnitude-3.1 quake was reported Sunday afternoon one mile from Costa Mesa, according to the USGS. That temblor occurred at 3:22 p.m. at a depth of 3.7 miles.
