Around Town: Irvine schools foundation golf tournament is Monday

The Irvine Public Schools Foundation will present its sixth annual Tee It Up for Education golf tournament Monday to help raise money for Irvine schools.

The event, hosted by Strawberry Farms Golf Club in Irvine, will begin at 11:30 a.m.

6 Irvine students receive scholarships

The Irvine Public Schools Foundation awarded scholarships to six Irvine students on May 20 at the annual Spirit of Community Awards.

Jaqueline Carr, a senior at Irvine High School, was awarded $5,000 as part of the Student Athlete Scholarship.

Sarah Verdegan, a senior at University High School, was given $5,000 as part of the Dr. Kevin Armstrong Memorial Scholarship.

Renee Roeder, a Woodbridge High School senior, was awarded $2,500 as part of the Rising Moon Scholarship.

Stephanie Chang, a Northwood High School student, Irene Koo, a senior at Woodbridge High, and Jiana Machhor, a senior at Woodbridge, each received a $1,000 Lee Bryn Brooks Community Service Scholarship.

Irvine golf tournament nets $70,000 for O.C. charity

More than 130 golf enthusiasts and community members teed off at the Oak Creek Golf Club in Irvine on May 19 to raise money for an Orange County nonprofit.

The $70,000 raised at the Swing for Kids Charity Golf Tournament will go to Community Service Programs, which helps provide counseling and other support services to struggling children and families.

Laguna Beach Youth Shelter Advisory Board President Kelly Cornwell and United Parcel Service were honored with the Margot Carlson Leadership Award for their support of CSP’s programs.

Culverdale Elementary receives gift from equipment company

Ellison Educational Equipment Inc., based in Lake Forest, has donated $2,500 worth of die-cutting machinery and products to Culverdale Elementary School in Irvine.

Die-cutting machines are typically used in craft projects to cut shapes out of materials.

Ellison representatives will visit the school to train teachers on how to use the equipment in their classrooms.

Mazda workers to stuff gift bags for kids in shelters and foster care

After the Mazda Foundation donated $500,000 to the My Stuff Bags Foundation, Mazda employees will volunteer Thursday to finish packing 500,000 bags the foundation will provide to children entering shelters or foster care.

The bag stuffing will take place at Mazda North American Operations in Irvine.

The My Stuff Bags Foundation, based in Westlake Village, was launched in 1998 and has provided children with bags filled with items such as toys, toiletries, clothing and blankets.
