Around Town: Newport Coast 8-year-old is leukemia society Boy of the Year

Eight-year-old Ace Calvert of Newport Coast was named 2016 Boy of the Year for the Orange County Inland Empire chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society at the organization’s Man & Woman of the Year gala.

Saturday’s event at the Fairmont hotel in Newport Beach raised $775,000 for the chapter.

Ace was diagnosed with leukemia in November 2012, when he was 4.

After three years of chemotherapy, oncology clinic visits, losing his hair and missing school, Ace had his last treatment protocol in February. He celebrated his eighth birthday March 21.

Chris Lee of Ladera Ranch and Holly Morales of Garden Grove won the titles of Man & Woman of the Year at the gala.

Newport lawyer to speak at entrepreneur gathering at U.N.

Newport Beach lawyer West Seegmiller plans to speak in front of a gathering of nationally recognized entrepreneurs Wednesday at the United Nations in New York City.

Seegmiller will be there to address the exploitation of impoverished workers around the world by companies in America, according to a news release. He is one of several speakers attending the Global Entrepreneurship Initiative.

“I have made it my mission to shine a light on the issue of American companies, mostly those involved in the manufacturing arena, exploiting the poor in developing nations simply to save costs,” Seegmiller said in a statement.

Seegmiller is a member of Consumer Attorneys of California and the American Assn. for Justice.

Vanguard’s center for women calls for awards nominations

The Global Center for Women and Justice at Vanguard University in Costa Mesa is accepting nominations for the annual Diamond Awards to be presented at the center’s Priceless Luncheon to End Human Trafficking fundraiser Sept. 17 at the Island Hotel in Newport Beach.

The awards recognize individuals, businesses, organizations and groups for their dedication to promoting justice for women and children affected by human trafficking. Nominations are reviewed by a panel of community leaders, philanthropists, businesses and Vanguard faculty members.

Nominations may be submitted at vanguard.edu/diamondaward.

OCC to hold annual sailing celebration

Orange Coast College’s School of Sailing & Seamanship plans its annual Discover Sailing and Summer Sailstice Celebration from noon to 4 p.m. June 18 at the school’s waterfront facility at 1801 W. Coast Hwy. in Newport Beach.

The event will give guests food and the opportunity to ride on one of Orange Coast’s sailboats. The school also will raffle off a certificate for a free beginning sailing class, a youth summer sailing camp or a powerboat class, according to a news release.
