Around Town: Golf tournament garners more than $75,000 for Irvine schools

The Irvine Public Schools Foundation’s sixth annual Tee It Up for Education golf tournament raised more than $75,000 for Irvine schools earlier this month.

The event at Strawberry Farms Golf Club in Irvine hosted 150 golfers.

“We are deeply grateful to our sponsors and community leaders for helping us to raise money for education in our community at this year’s Tee It Up for Education golf tournament in support of world-class education for every student,” the foundation’s president and chief executive, Neda Eaton, said in a statement.

Barclay concert helps raise $392,000

The Wooden Floor’s 33rd annual concert “You. Me. We.” raised $392,000 for youth development programs earlier this month.

For the concert, the Irvine Barclay Theatre hosted performances by youth dancers.

At its Santa Ana campus, the Wooden Floor annually gives 375 under-served youth the opportunity to better their lives through dance, according to a news release.

“Our model encourages students to think differently about themselves and compels our community to reconsider contemporary dance as a catalyst for change,” the Wooden Floor’s executive director and co-CEO, Dawn Reese, said in a statement.

Retired general coming to support Goodwill programs

Retired Gen. George Casey, former chief of staff of the U.S. Army, will attend Goodwill of Orange County’s annual Golf Invitational from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday at the Pelican Hill Golf Club’s North Course in Newport Coast.

All proceeds from the event benefit the Tierney Center for Veteran Services, which connects veterans to services at no cost through a network of numerous partners and resources.

The center’s goal is to put 15,000 veterans to work by 2020.

Project Hope Alliance aided by San Juan Capistrano family

Team members of Costa Mesa-based nonprofit Project Hope Alliance gathered earlier this month at the San Juan Capistrano home of James Peterson, chairman and chief executive of Microsemi, a manufacturer of semiconductor and system solutions.

At the event, Peterson and his wife Sheila announced their personal commitment of $50,000 to the nonprofit. Microsemi is also providing a matching donation.

Project Hope Alliance aids the homeless with family and youth education programs.

Concordia names new provost

Concordia University in Irvine has appointed Peter Senkbeil as its new provost and executive vice president, effective July 1.

Senkbeil joined the university 24 years ago as a theater professor. He most recently served as associate provost and vice president of academic affairs.

In his new role, he will oversee all aspects of curriculum and faculty and supervise the deans of Concordia’s five schools.
