Around Town: Concordia University celebrates 40th anniversary

Concordia University Irvine held a 40th-anniversary celebration last weekend with musical entertainment from the 1940s-style band Wartime Radio Revue and a proclamation from Irvine Mayor Steven Choi.

More than 1,100 guests attended Sunday’s event.

“We’re especially proud that throughout the university’s four decades, we have held true to the mission of empowering students for lives of learning, service and leadership while remaining faithful to our Lutheran heritage,” said Concordia President Kurt Krueger.

Program assisting Korean students celebrates 10 years

More than 100 community members and dignitaries celebrated the 10th year of the PACE Korea program this month at the Twenty Eight Restaurant and Lounge in Irvine.

PACE Korea, or Program to Advance Cultural Education, is a partnership of the Irvine Public Schools Foundation, the Irvine Korean Parents Assn. and Cal State Fullerton’s Fullerton International Resources for Students and Teachers.

PACE Korea was established in 2007 to help educators serve the needs of Korean students and offer opportunities for Irvine Unified School District educators to learn about Korean cultures in Irvine.

“The PACE program is a shining example of IPSF’s mission to enhance the educational experience of each child in every school,” Neda Eaton, chief executive of the Irvine Public Schools Foundation, said in a statement.

OC Fair to host clothing drive for Goodwill

The We Care Wednesday clothing drive to benefit Goodwill of Orange County will be held Wednesday at the Orange County Fair in Costa Mesa.

Last year’s drive attracted more than 15,000 donors who contributed a total of 45,885 pounds of clothing.

UCI gets grant for project on Alzheimer’s

A project for Alzheimer’s disease research led by UC Irvine was awarded a grant of $1 million annually for two years.

UCI associate professor Joshua Grill will lead a team researching the effects of large doses of vitamin nicotinamide on people who have the disease.

Tournament in Mexico helps Irvine charity

Irvine-based HomeAid Orange County was one of six organizations to benefit from the $3 million raised at the 20th annual Stars & Stripes Tournament, a four-day fishing, golf and music fundraiser held in June at the Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort in Mexico.

HomeAid works to provide housing and other services to homeless people.

UCI’s Barclay to host concert for traditional Mexican performing arts

The nonprofit Relampago del Cielo will hold its 40th-anniversary concert at the Barclay Theatre at UC Irvine on Aug. 20 and 21.

Relampago del Cielo, based in Santa Ana, supports the study and preservation of traditional Mexican performing arts through music and dance.

Performances will be at 8 p.m. Aug. 20 and 2 p.m. Aug. 21. Tickets are $35 per person.

The Barclay Theatre is at 4242 Campus Drive, Irvine.
