Costa Mesa firefighters quickly doused a small fire outside a house Monday evening, according to authorities.

A neighbor noticed the flames at about 7:30 p.m. in the 1700 block of Peninsula Place, Costa Mesa fire Capt. Chris Coates said. The blaze was in an area where trash was stored outside, Coates said.

After the neighbor alerted the residents, firefighters were called and extinguished the flames outside. They also tore into portions of the side of the house and the attic to make sure flames hadn’t spread into the walls, according to the fire department.

Twenty-two firefighters responded and had the blaze out in about 10 minutes, Coates said.

Officials were investigating the cause of the fire, which resulted in an estimated $30,000 in damage.
