Public safety leaders in Costa Mesa and Newport Beach thrilled a crowd of onlookers Thursday night as they rammed and revved their way through the Motor Home Madness demolition derby at the Orange County Fair.

Costa Mesa Police Chief Rob Sharpnack and Fire Chief Dan Stefano joined Newport Beach Police Chief Jon Lewis in jumping behind the wheels to wreck RVs in the Action Sports Arena at the Costa Mesa fairgrounds.

Six drivers suited up to race around in the dirt. Lewis, however, didn’t get the chance to smash. His vehicle wouldn’t start.

Sharpnack and Stefano finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Lewis did snag a consolation prize, though. His rig was named the Best Appearing RV, according to Bob Basile, who puts on demolition derbies at the fair with his company, Sunnyside Promotions.

Thursday’s rumble was part of a series of derbies that began Wednesday and runs through the end of the fair on Sunday.

A second Motor Home Madness is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sunday at the Action Sports Arena.
