Rally supports Fairview Park ballot measure

Students from Costa Mesa’s Waldorf School of Orange County, their parents and others rallied Tuesday in Fairview Park in support of a ballot measure that activists say would give the public more say about the future of the park.

The group, which numbered about 25 around 4p.m., congregated on the park bridge spanning Placentia Avenue. They waved and attached signs to the bridge to show support for Measure AA, which, if approved by city voters Nov.8, would require voter approval for some potential changes at the 208-acre park, such as adjustments to operating hours or building new permanent structures.

Phrases on the signs included “Save Fairview Park” and “Fairview Forever.” Some students from Waldorf, located next to the park, made additional signs with colorful markers as passing cars occasionally honked in support.

Waldorf parent Kristen Krofina, whose family lives in Costa Mesa’s Lower Birds neighborhood next to Fairview Park, said she supports the measure and is against the idea of adding more parking lots or sports facilities there.

“We have one bit of open space in Costa Mesa left,” she said.

Opponents of Measure AA say it is overly restrictive and would subject too many proposals to a citywide vote.
