A family and two pet dogs escaped a fire at their Newport Beach home before firefighters arrived to douse the blaze Friday afternoon, according to fire officials.

A man smelled smoke around 4:15 p.m. and discovered the fire in the home’s garage at 927 Aleppo St., according to the Newport Beach Fire Department.

After the family and pets escaped, firefighters arrived and saw heavy smoke coming out of the garage and flames on the roof, fire officials said.

Crews searched the garage and used chain saws and a hose on the roof to control the fire, according to authorities.

Twenty-five firefighters contained the flames to the garage and roof, but the home’s interior sustained some smoke damage, fire officials said.

Authorities estimated the cost of the overall damage at $55,000.

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the blaze.
