Huntington planners to consider assisted care facility

The Huntington Beach Planning Commission on Tuesday will consider a permit request for a proposed 68-unit assisted care facility for seniors.

A staff report recommends that the commission advise the City Council to approve the conditional use permit, allowing the facility to be built on the 1-acre vacant lot at 18922 Delaware St.

The applicant is Paul Bunton of Advocacy Development Partners. The Fremont-based company, which specializes in senior living facilities, is proposing a three-story, 68,120-square-foot building, the staff report says.

The facility would include 89 beds in 68 units, as well as dining areas, entertainment and activity rooms, a beauty salon and a fitness center.

Workers would provide 24-hour service seven days a week. For residents who have Alzheimer’s or otherwise can’t drive, a daily transportation service would be available, the report says.

The business has said that the facility would “address an increasing need for assisted living facilities in Orange County.” The staff report says market research shows that Huntington Beach and surrounding areas have a “distinct demand for services of this quality.”

The three-story facility would mirror the height of a nearby condominium complex, reflect Spanish Colonial architecture and “contribute to the sense of community by respecting the scale, proportion and character of the surrounding area,” according to the report.

The report says notices were mailed to nearby residents notifying them of the proposed facility and that no complaints were received.
