A man is in custody and another is at large following a brief chase in Huntington Beach early Thursday.

Huntington Beach police officers tried to pull over a vehicle near Edwards Street and Warner Avenue at about 1:30 a.m. The driver didn’t stop and officers began pursuing the vehicle, which they later learned had been reported stolen, Sgt. Thoby Archer said.

After a brief chase, the car struck another vehicle and hit a curb near Gothard Street and Edinger Avenue. Two men got out of the car and ran into a nearby flood-control channel, Archer said.

Archer said officers saw one of the men toss a handgun out of the car during the pursuit. Officers, assisted by a Huntington Beach police helicopter crew, found a suspect in the channel.

Rigoberto Avina, 25, of Hawaiian Gardens was arrested on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a handgun, Archer said.
