Boxes and bags of donated clothes, stuffed animals and other items intended for charities were reportedly stolen from Costa Mesa Councilman Gary Monahan’s bar and restaurant over the weekend.

Skosh Monahan’s on Newport Boulevard had hosted a donation drive that began Thursday for goods to be given to Fresh Beginnings Ministries and the Costa Mesa Network for Homeless Solutions.

Monahan said Monday that six to eight boxes of items and several bags of clothes were placed on the restaurant’s unlocked patio.

Sometime between Saturday night and Sunday morning, the contents of nearly all the boxes and bags were stolen, Monahan said.

Among the lost items were computer equipment, canned food, toys and toiletries.

Monahan said he didn’t figure that leaving the items on the patio would make them a target for thieves.

“It was just Goodwill kind of stuff,” he said.

The donation drive also raised several thousand dollars, but Monahan said no money was stolen.

Organizers said they likely will hold another fundraiser in a few weeks to make up for what was lost.
