A blaze that ignited on an outdoor patio of a Newport Beach home early Monday displaced four residents, according to fire officials.

When firefighters arrived at 12 Old Course Drive at 4 a.m., they saw flames and heavy smoke coming from the two-story house.

Twenty-three firefighters from the Newport Beach and Costa Mesa fire departments responded, according to a news release.

After entering the house, crews found fire on both floors and in a large outdoor patio enclosure that contained a television, a kitchen and an integrated heat system, said Newport Beach fire Capt. Ty Lunde.

The size and intensity of the fire posed a threat to the house next door at 10 Old Course Drive, but firefighters were able to confine the fire to 12 Old Course. However, the house and outdoor patio sustained major fire and smoke damage, according to Lunde.

“We quickly got the bulk of the fire knocked down, but we were there for several hours making sure it was completely extinguished,” Lunde said.

A man, a woman and two children were displaced by the blaze but uninjured.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Damage to the structure was estimated at $400,000, with $50,000 in damage to personal belongings, authorities said.

The home has an estimated value of $3.2 million, the news release stated.
