Erwin Chemerinksy, dean of the UC Irvine School of Law, will discuss recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions during a Wake Up Newport event Thursday morning.

After about 45 years with a conservative majority, the Supreme Court could soon be heading into a different era following the death of Justice Antonin Scalia in February.

The major rulings of the recently completed Supreme Court term show there are no longer five conservative-leaning votes, marking a historic shift for the high court, Chemerinksy wrote in a commentary for the Los Angeles Times in June.

Topics up for discussion at the Wake Up Newport event include affirmative action, birth control, abortion, immigration and public corruption.

Wake Up Newport, presented by the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce, will begin at 7:15 a.m. at the Public Library, 1000 Avocado Ave.
