High School Baseball: Super dulicates Academy MVP honor

Sage Hill School junior pitcher Brett Super earned the Academy League MVP award for the second time for leading the baseball program to a historic season, back-to-back undefeated league titles and its first CIF Southern Section Division 6 championship.

Super threw a three-hitter in top-seeded Sage Hill’s 9-0 win against league rival Crean Lutheran, the No. 2 seed, in the section final at UC Riverside. The result extended Sage Hill’s winning streak to 27 games, an Orange County record.

The other first-team members from Sage Hill (28-1, 10-0 in league) were freshman right fielder Edward Pelc, freshman pitcher Ashwin Chona and senior catcher Tobias Bush.

Super finished 13-0 with a 0.51 earned-run average and two saves, striking out 133 and walking only 20 in 97 innings. In his final 41 innings of the year, Super did not allow a run.

The right-hander threw a perfect game in a 3-0 win at Cerritos Valley Christian in the semifinals of the Orange County Division at the Newport Elks Tournament and a no-hitter in a 2-0 win against Santa Paula in the quarterfinals of the Division 6 playoffs.

Super threw eight complete games, six went for shutouts.

Super, who also played third base, hit .268 with three home runs and 24 runs batted in. He had four triples, two doubles, 20 runs and 14 walks.

Pelc batted .489 with one home run and 21 RBIs. He had a .600 on-base percentage and a .677 slugging percentage.

Pelc finished with 38 runs, five triples, four doubles, 25 walks and 23 stolen bases.

Chona went 12-0 with a 0.65 ERA and two saves. The left-hander struck out 85 and walked 20 in 65 innings.

Bush hit .315 with 14 RBIs, eight doubles and one triple.

Sage’s second-team picks included Cal-bound senior first baseman Conner Bock and NYU-bound senior shortstop Coltrane Tait.

Sage Hill senior Jack Pelc and freshman Conner Hatz received honorable mention.
