High School Roundup: CdM girls’ basketball grabs big league-opening win at Woodbridge

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Corona del Mar 50, Woodbridge 45

IRVINE — Krista Anderson had 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Sea Kings in Friday’s key Pacific Coast League opener at Woodbridge High.

Anderson helped seal with the win with two free throws late. Natalia Bruening had 14 points and 12 rebounds for CdM (12-3, 1-0 in league). Freshman Sami Uehara had eight points, including two three-pointers, and Kat Hess had seven points and seven rebounds.

The Sea Kings and Warriors shared the Pacific Coast League title last season.

CdM returns to action Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., at home against Beckman.

Sage Hill 40, St. Margaret’s 37

Heather Park scored 12 points and Kate Knollenberg added 11 to help lead the Lightning to the Academy League home win on Friday.

Kenna Knollenberg hit a three-pointer with 20 seconds to help secure the win for Sage Hill (5-7, 1-1 in league).

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Newport Harbor 61, Fountain Valley 51

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Brandon Phillips scored 15 points to lead the Sailors in their Sunset League opener on Friday.

Nate Harding had 11 points and 13 rebounds for Newport Harbor (15-3, 1-0 in league).

Fountain Valley is 13-5, 0-1.

The Sailors play host to Huntington Beach on Wednesday.

Saddleback 41, Estancia 39

SANTA ANA — Junior Evan Pettingill scored 13 points, all in the second half, to nearly lead an Eagles’ comeback in their Orange Coast League opener on Friday.

Senior Connor Brown had nine points for Estancia (9-9, 0-1 in league), which trailed 17-2 in the second period. But the Eagles outscored Saddleback, 18-7, in the third period.

Estancia got to within one with eight seconds left, but Saddleback held off the Eagles.

Costa Mesa 51, Calvary Chapel 44

SANTA ANA – Senior forward Nabeel Salameh scored 17 points for the Mustangs in their Orange Coast League opener on Friday.

Senior guard Calvin Ko had 11 points and senior guard Dino Pepic had eight points for Costa Mesa (8-9, 1-0 in league).

The Mustangs play host to Laguna Beach on Wednesday.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Estancia 2, Saddleback 2

Andy Martinez and Sergio Gutierrez each scored a goal in the Eagles’ Orange Coast League opener at home on Friday.

George Martinez and Kevin Pizarro had assists.

Estancia (7-2-3, 0-0-1 in league) plays Calvary Chapel at Centennial Park on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

WRESTLING

Asics Southern California Challenge

TUSTIN — Seven Newport Harbor High wrestlers qualified for the second day of the two-day tournament at Tustin High.

Senior Alain Ward (120 pounds) and junior Drew Dobbs (195) are in the championship bracket.

Juniors Michael Craft (113), Ethan Zimmerman (152) and DJ Dennison (182), along with seniors Erik Herrera (132) and Valdemar Gomez (285) also qualified for the second day for the Sailors.

Newport Harbor is in 14th place out of 50 schools.
