JC Football: Truxton among four local named All-California Region III

Newport Harbor High product Quest Truxton, a sophomore at Golden West College, is one of four local players named All-California Region III in football.

Also honored were Orange Coast College standouts Stefan Derrick, Mark Cushing and Derrick Worthy.

Truxton, a receiver and kick return man, accounted for 1,555 all-purpose yards in 2015, helping the Rustlers ascend to the No. 1 ranking in the state before finishing 8-3.

Truxton, a two-time All-Southern Conference performer, caught 68 passes for 902 yards and 10 touchdowns. He averaged 26.1 yards on 15 kickoff returns and 11.6 yards on 18 punt returns, including one touchdown.

Derrick, a sophomore receiver, had 65 receptions for 1,161 yards and 16 touchdowns. He was also an All-Southern Conference honoree.

Cushing, a sophomore middle linebacker, led the Pirates with 94 tackles in his only season after transferring from Southwest Missouri State. Cushing had eight tackles for loss, two interceptions, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

Worthy, a sophomore cornerback, had four interceptions, three of which he returned for touchdowns, and 42 tackles.

The three OCC standouts helped the Pirates post a 7-4 record, finish second in the Southern Conference, and earn the program’s first bowl berth since 2006.

OCC finished No. 15 in the final state coaches poll. Golden West, which OCC defeated, 17-14, wound up No. 9.
