High School Roundup: Newport Harbor boys’ soccer improves to 5-0 in league

BOYS’ SOCCER

Newport Harbor 2, Fountain Valley 1

Alex Enriquez and Bryant Reyes each scored a goal for the visiting Sailors, who improved to 5-0 in Sunset League action on Wednesday.

Newport Harbor, which went 0-10 in league last season, is atop the league.

Goalkeeper Damian Ramos made six saves for the Sailors.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Costa Mesa 46, Laguna Beach 39

The Mustangs improved to 3-0 in the Orange Coast League after beating the Breakers at Costa Mesa on Wednesday.

It was the first time in 10 years that Costa Mesa won at home against Laguna Beach.

The Mustangs next play at Godinez Friday at 7 p.m.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Estancia 12, Saddleback 9 (OT)

Katelyn Chesemore and Annie Mitchell both scored two overtime goals for the Eagles in Wednesday’s Orange Coast League game.

Chesemore finished with six goals for Estancia (6-1, 2-0 in league), and Mitchell had three. Sydni White, Esmy Martinez and Julia Paluch chipped in one goal each.

Hanna Smith made 16 saves for Estancia.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Ocean View 2, Westminster 1

Kaci Montoya and Micayla Shook scored for the Seahawks in Tuesday’s Golden West League game at Ocean View High.

The Seahawks improved to 5-10-1, and 3-0 in league.

Ocean View plays away against Orange on Thursday at Fred Kelly Stadium.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Los Amigos 39, Santiago 24

Cheryl Caldera had a team-high 17 points to lead the Lobos (15-3, 1-2 in league) to their first Golden West League win.

Santiago dropped to 5-12 overall, 0-3 in league.

Huntington Beach 69, Marina 37

Frankie Wade-Sanchez lit up the scoreboard with 28 points to lead the surging Oilers (13-7, 3-1 in Academy League) to their third straight win.

Kaylyn Nakaji added 17 points for Huntington Beach.

Marina (7-13, 2-2) was led by Katie Nguyen and Michelle Esparza, who had 11 and 10 points, respectively.

If Huntington Beach successfully navigates past Newport Harbor today, it will set up an opportunity for the Oilers to grab a share of first place against Los Alamitos next Monday.

Los Alamitos has won both of the team’s meetings this year, taking the Oilers’ home league game, 56-52, back on Jan. 5.
