High School Roundup: Santos’ pin leads Newport Harbor to win

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Sailors senior team captain David Santos (195 pounds) secured a dramatic victory by pin to lead Newport Harbor to a thrilling Sunset League win on Wednesday.

The Sailors were trailing, 33-30, with Santos remaining. He was down two points with 27 seconds left in his match. But then Santos scored a takedown and then went for the pin with 11 seconds left to lift Newport Harbor to third place in the Sunset League for the third straight year.

Other winners for the Sailors included: junior Pablo Bosquez (120 pounds) by decision, senior Harrison Reich (145) by pin, junior Ethan Zimmerman (152), senior Cooper Hendrix (170) by decision, junior DJ van Oostendorp (182) by decision, junior Chris Aviles (220) by decision (triple overtime), senior Valdemar Gomez (285) by forfeit.

Sage Hill 67, Oxford Academy 53

CYPRESS — Junior guard Dominic Sadeghi scored 27 points to lead the Lightning in the Academy League game on Tuesday.

Senior Chance Kuehnel added 15 points for Sage Hill (13-6, 5-2 in league).
