High School Roundup: Sage Hill girls’ soccer edges St. Margaret’s

Lexi Magliarditi scored in the 53rd minute, assisted by Janis Jin, for the Lightning in the Academy League game Friday night at Sage Hill.

Sage Hill benefitted from pressure created often by forward Rachael Jaffe in getting the ball forward. Claire Novotny and Lauren Thunen in the midfield, as well as Tiffany Taylor and Jaclyn Gerschultz on defense, were other standouts for the Lightning (8-4-4, 5-1-1 in league).

Rival St. Margaret’s, 6-1 in league, stays in first place by two points with three league games remaining.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Newport Harbor 38, Fountain Valley 36

Senior Charlie Stassel scored 15 points, including two big free throws to help lead the Sailors to the Sunset League win.

The Barons nearly pulled off a shocking win at the buzzer when Matt Serven heaved a full-court shot that hit the back of the rim after grabbing a missed free throw by Newport Harbor.

But the Sailors held on for the win and second place in the Sunset Leauge. Newport Harbor improved to 19-5, 4-2 in league.

Zach Blaine added eight points for the Sailors.

Fountain Valley dropped to 15-8, 1-5.

Costa Mesa 71, Calvary Chapel 54

Senior guard Chris Calderon scored 19 points for the Mustangs in the Orange Coast League game on Friday.

Senior guard Calvin Ko added 17 points and senior forward Nabeel Salameh had nine points for Costa Mesa (13-11, 5-1 in league), which plays at Laguna Beach on Wednesday. The Breakers are undefeated in league.
