College Roundup: OCC men’s volleyball wins twice to open season

Golden West Tournament

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Orange Coast College defeated Long Beach, 25-20, 21-25, 17-25, 25-21, 15-8, and also topped Golden West, 25-15, 28-26, 25-19, to open its season Sunday at the Golden West Quad.

Sophomore outside hitter Adrian Faitalia led OCC with 27 kills in the two matches, while Gianluca Grasso added 24. Grasso also had eight aces on the day.

Middle blockers Matthew Ujkic (four kills on six swings with no errors) and Austin Marriott (seven kills on 11 swings) came up big for the Pirates.

Libero Tommy Casey had 21 combined digs, while setter Andrew McCall had 76 assists.

OCC plays at Santa Barbara City College on Saturday at 1 p.m.

BASEBALL

Redlands 6, Vanguard 5

The host Lions surrendered a 4-0 lead in the nonconference game Tuesday.

Senior shortstop Jose Rojas went two for three with a home run, three runs batted in and a stolen base to lead the Lions (4-1).

Brock Eissman was two for four with one RBI as No. 22-ranked Vanguard managed seven hits, two more than Redlands (1-0), which benefited from two Vanguard errors to produce four unearned runs.

Roberto Johnson (three innings) and Michael Ostrea (1 2/3 innings) did not allow a hit in their relief appearances for Vanguard, which opens a three-game nonconference series on Friday at Biola at 2 p.m.
