College Roundup: OCC Coach Altobelli picks up win No. 600

BASEBALL

Orange Coast 5, Cuesta 3

Jacob Doty, Ramiro Velasco and Eric Wagaman all homered for the Pirates, who produced career win No. 600 for Coach John Altobelli in the nonconference home game Friday.

Doty and Velasco were two for four with two runs batted in for the winners (4-0).

McKinley LeFore pitched three innings of relief to earn the win and John Balliet allowed no hits or runs in two innings to earn his first save.

Cuesta is 2-4.

The two teams conclude a three-game series on Saturday, beginning at noon.

Biola 9, Vanguard 3

Brock Eissman hit a two-run home run, Trai Patrick went three for four and Brandon Sandoval was two for three for the host Lions in the nonconference game Friday.

Starting pitcher Tyler Skinner allowed eight runs on nine hits over 32/3 innings to absorb the loss for the Lions (4-2).

Biola is 4-0.

The two teams play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.

SOFTBALL

Vanguard 5, Cal State San Marcos 0

Sophomore Kolbi Tonini tossed a two-hit shutout to propel the host Lions in the nonconference season opener on Friday.

Sophomore Morgan Piblin was three for three with one run batted in and one run and senior Taylor Wilson was three for four and scored twice for the winners.

Doubleheader

Host Orange Coast College dropped a pair of games on Friday, falling to Long Beach, 10-8, and dropping a 7-5 decision to Southwestern.

Against Long Beach, Nala Osorio was two for three with three runs batted in, while Briana Covarubias, Jenna Hernandez, Daria Bair and Anna Marin had two hits apiece.

Against Southwestern, Osorio was two for three with two RBIs, while Covarubias was two for three with one RBI.

The two lossed dropped OCC to 2-2.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 76, Menlo 50

Senior Claire Lamunu had 23 points, nine rebounds and seven steals to lead the No. 5-ranked Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference home game Thursday.

Christiana Gerostergiou had 12 points, six rebounds and three steals, while senior Maya Kennedy had 12 points and eight assists for the winners (20-1, 9-0 in conference).

Kandyce Smith had eight assists for Vanguard, which plays host to William Jessup on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

Menlo is 9-13, 2-7.

Cypress 78, Orange Coast 71 (2 OT)

CYPRESS — The visiting Pirates missed a chance to climb in the Orange Empire Conference standings on Friday.

Sydney Driggs had 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead OCC (17-10, 5-4 in conference).

Michelle Wu had 21 points and Danielle Obong added 11 for OCC.

Cypress improved to 17-6, 7-1 and is tied atop the OEC with Saddleback.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 83, Menlo 77

Malachi Hoosein had 14 points and six rebounds to lead the host Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Thursday.

Victor Evans had 14 points in 18 reserve minutes and Zach Allmon added 11 points, five rebounds, three blocks, two steals and one assist for the winners (5-18, 3-6 in conference).

Menlo is 9-12, 2-7.
