High School Roundup: Newport Harbor’s Stooks, Datt place third at wrestling regional

GIRLS’ WRESTLING

CIF Southern Section Southern Regional

TUSTIN — Newport Harbor High junior Cheyenne Stooks placed third in the 106-pound division with a 4-1 record, including three pins at Tustin High.

Senior Nicole Datt (111 pounds) also placed third with a 4-1 record, including one pin.

Stooks and Datt advance to the CIF Southern Section Tournament Friday and Saturday at Roosevelt High in Los Angeles. The top eight places there will advance to the Girls CIF state meet. They are the first Newport Harbor female wrestlers to qualify for the CIF-SS tournament.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Edison 49, Corona del Mar 45

Natalia Bruening had 19 points and 12 rebounds for the Sea Kings in the nonleague game on Saturday.

Kelly Tam added 13 points with three three-pointers for CdM (18-6), which plays at Northwood Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

Sage Hill 44, Whitney 38

CERRITOS — Kenna Knollenberg scored 18 points to lead the Lightning in the Academy League game on Saturday.

Kate Knollenberg added 12 points and Heather Park scored seven points for Sage Hill (15-6, 8-2 in league).

Sage Hill 73, Whitney 64

CERRITOS — Chance Keuhnel scored 20 points to lead the Lightning in the Academy League game on Saturday.

Dominic Sadeghi added 18 pionts. He was 12 for 13 from the free-throw line. Alfonso Corona scored 13 points for Sage Hill (15-7, 7-3 in league).
